COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY (CBT)

“Perfectionism is a self destructive and addictive belief system that fuels this primary thought: If I look perfect, and do everything perfectly, I can avoid or minimize the painful feelings of shame, judgement, and blame.”
― Brené Brown

CBT is...

Focused on:
Cognitions - the idea that present-day issues may be influenced by maladaptive cognitive processes/distortions (i.e. automatic thoughts, information processing, catastrophizing, jumping to conclusions etc.).

Behaviour - all behaviour (functional or dysfunctional) is learned, and can be altered through self-monitoring, activity scheduling and exposure.

Thinking about cognitions, thoughts and behaviours is valuable because...

Examining how we make sense of what is happening around us, and how our perceptions may impact the way we think, act and feel,  helps us find new pathways to resolve current challenges.
We can then incorporate strategies into daily life that modify maladaptive thinking/behaviours (i.e. cognitive restructuring, behaviour modification, consideration of core beliefs).
